tent advice

Ok... if you're shy about posting email me but...

i can't decide

REI half dome

vs

'ultra light' rei quarter dome

Ive read ALL the reviews... both seem good and reasonably priced. The REI people tell me that the half dome is fine for backpacking. space for the dog, heavier duty... but it's close to 2 lbs heavier... and i'm not exactly a powerhouse. the quarter dome got mad reviews in some of the gear magazines as an ultralight tent...

SO... i need solid advice cause i've got a few trips planned and am ready to buy. which one?
thoughts please?

How long of trips are you planning on? Over nighters or a few days? Solo or group trips? Are you looking for a 3 season or 4 season tent? In other words, what time of the year are you going to be using it for mainly? What type of bag are you going to pack it with?

seems like the REI one would have only been $50.00 in July...dork.

and just to add insult to injury- that dog is going to eat the light one in a single fit, stop being so weird and just get the reasonable one...please!
Oh,
Gretta is making me sign this one to avoid any confusion as to who might be being an ass...

HAHAHA - as if i couldn't tell who left that comment. :)

yea yea yea, 50 dollars i know! let's leave it at darkside influence :)

thanx... reasonable one it is. and i plan on backpacking camping at different times of the year except when it's ass cold out - then i'll stay inside where it's warm :) i have a 30 degree bag that's gotten me through some cold nights so far.

If you have been happy with your bag so far, I would say go with the ultra lite. You can always pick up a cocoon bag line if you are worried about temps. You would be surprised on where and how you can cut down on weight.

Check out this book,
"Walking to Vermont" - Christopher Wren.

Very good read and may help you out when planning a trip. It sure did for me.

I have the half dome and do love it. Know little about the ultra light. The half dome seams light to me, pretty darn tough and is roomy, a plus for you and your pushy & space greedy pup.
